숫다니파타 01(사품蛇品) : 02 드하니야(陀尼耶經 Dhaniya Sutta)

With the Cattle-owner Dhaniya (소 치는 드하니야)

소 치는 드하니야(다니야, Dhaniya)와 부처(Buddha) 사이의 대화로서, 하나는 세상의 안보에 기뻐하고, 다른 하나는 종교적 믿음에 기뻐합니다.

❝I have boiled (my) rice, I have milked (my cows),❞ -- so said the herdsman Dhaniya --
❝I am living together with my fellows near the banks of the Mahi (river), (my) house is covered, the fire is kindled:therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!❞

소 치는 드하니야(다니야)가 말했다.
❝나는 이미 밥도 지었고, 우유도 짜 놓았습니다.❞
❝나는 마히 강변에서 동료들과 함께 살고 있습니다. 내 움막은 지붕이 덮여저 있고, 방에는 불이 피워져 있습니다. 그러니 천(신) : 天(神)이여, 비를 내리시려거든 내리소서.❞

❝I am free from anger, free from stubbornness,❞ -- so said Bhagavat --
❝I am abiding for one night near the banks of the Mahi (river), my house❞

세존(世尊)께서 대답하셨다.
❝나는 성내지 않고 마음의 완강한 미혹(迷惑)을 벗어 버렸다.❞
❝나는 마히 강변 뱅크스소나무 근처에서 하룻밤을 머무르리라.❞

❝Gad-flies are not to be found (with me),❞ -- so said the herdsman Dhaniya --
❝in meadows abounding with grass the cows are roaming, and they can endure rain when it comes: therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!❞

소 치는 드하니야가 말했다.
❝모기나 쇠파리도 없고, 소들은 늪지대에 우거진 풀을 뜯어먹으며,, 비가 와도 견디어 낼 것입니다. 그러니 천(신)이여, 비를 내리시려거든 내리소서.❞

❝(By me) is made a well-constructed raft,❞ --so said Bhagavat,--
❝I have passed over (to Nibbana), I have reached the further bank, having overcome the torrent (of passions); there is no (further) use for a raft: therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!❞

부처님께서 대답하셨다.
❝내 뗏목은 이미 잘 만들어져 있다. 거센 흐름에도 끄떡없이 잘 건너 벌써 피안(彼岸)에 이르렀으니, 이제는 더 뗏목이 소용없노라. 그러니 천(신)이여, 비를 내리시려거든 비를 내리소서."

❝My wife is obedient, not wanton,❞ --so said the herdsman Dhaniya,--
❝for a long time she has been living together (with me), she is winning, and I hear nothing wicked of her: therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!❞

소 치는 드하니야가 말했다.
❝내 아내는 온순하고 음란하지 않습니다. 오래 함께 살아도 항상 내 마음에 듭니다. 그녀에게 그 어떤 나쁜 점(惡)이 있다는 말도 듣지 못했습니다. 그러니 천(신)이여, 비를 내리려거든 내리소서.❞

❝My mind is obedient, delivered (from all worldliness),❞ --so said Bhagavat,--
❝it has for a long time been highly cultivated and well-subdued, there is no longer anything wicked in me: therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!❞

부처님께서 대답하셨다.
❝내 마음은 내게 순종하고 해탈해 있다. 오랜 수양으로 잘 다스려졌다. 내게는 그 어떤 나쁜 점(惡)도 있지 않다. 그러니 천(신)이여, 비를 내리려거든 비를 내리소서.❞

❝I support myself by my own earnings,❞ --so said the herdsman Dhaniya,--
❝and my children are (all) about me, healthy; I hear nothing wicked of them: therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!❞

소 치는 드하니야가 말했다.
❝나는 놀지 않고 내 힘으로 살아가고 있습니다. 내 아이들은 모두 다 병 없이 건강합니다. 그들에게 그 어떤 나쁜 점(惡)이 있다는 말도 듣지 못했습니다. 그러니 천(신)이여, 비를 내리려거든 내리소서.❞

❝I am no one　's servant,❞ --so said Bhagavat,--
❝with what I have gained I wander about in all the world, there is no need (for me) to serve: therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!❞

부처님께서 대답하셨다.
❝나는 그 누구에게도 고용된 사람이 아니다. 스스로 얻은 것에 의해 온 누리를 걷노라. 남에게 고용될 이유가 없다. 그러니 천(신)이여, 비를 내리려거든 내리소서.❞

❝I have cows, I have calves,❞ -- so said the herdsman Dhaniya;--
❝I have cows in calf and heifers, and I have also a bull as lord over the cows: therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!❞

소 치는 드하니야가 말했다.
"아직 길들이지 않은 송아지도 있고, 젖을 먹는 어린 소도 있습니다. 새끼 밴 어미소도 있고, 발정한 암소도 있습니다. 그리고 암소의 짝인 황소도 있습니다. 그러니 천(신)이여, 비를 내리려거든 내리소서.❞

❝I have no cows, I have no calves,❞ --so said Bhagavat,--
❝I have no cows in calf and no heifers, and I have no bull as a lord over the cows: therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!❞

부처님께서 대답하셨다.
❝아직 길들이지 않은 송아지도 없고, 젖을 먹는 어린 소도 없다. 새끼 밴 어미소도 없으며, 발정한 암소도 없다. 그리고 암소의 짝인 황소도 없다. 그러니 천(신)이여, 비를 내리려거든 내리소서."

❝The stakes are driven in, and cannot be shaken,❞ --so said the herdsman Dhaniya,--
❝the ropes are made of munga grass, new and well-made, the cows will not be able to break them: therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!❞

소 치는 드하니야가 말했다.
❝소를 매 놓을 말뚝은 땅에 박혀 흔들리지 않습니다. <뭉자> 풀로 만든 새 새끼줄은 잘 꼬여 있으니, 송아지도 끊을 수 없을 것입니다. 그러니 천(신)이여, 비를 내리려거든 내리소서.❞

❝Having, like a bull, rent the bonds; having, like an elephant, broken through the galukkhi creeper, I shall not again enter into a womb: therefore, if thou like, rain, O sky!❞

부처님께서 대답하셨다.
❝황소처럼 고삐를 끊고, 코끼리처럼 냄새나는 덩굴을 짓밟았으니, 나는 다시 모태(母胎)에 들지는 않을 것이다. 그러니 천(신)이여, 비를 내리려거든 내리소서.❞

Then at once a shower poured down, filling both sea and land. Hearing the sky raining, Dhaniya spoke thus:

갑자기 검은 구름이 비가 되어 내리니 골짜기와 언덕에 물이 넘쳤다. 천(신)이 뿌리는 빗소리를 듣고 드하니야는 이렇게 말했다.

❝No small gain indeed (has accrued) to us since we have seen Bhagavat; we take refuge in thee, O (thou who art) ndowed with the eye (of wisdom); be thou our master, O great Muni!❞

❝우리는 거룩한 부처님을 만나 얻은 바가 참으로 큽니다. 눈이 있는 이여, 우리는 당신께 귀의(歸依)하오니 스승이 되어 주소서. 위대한 성자(聖者)이시여.❞

❝Both my wife and myself are obedient; (if) we lead a holy life before Sugata, we shall conquer birth and death, and put an end to pain.❞

❝아내와 저는 부처님(善逝) 곁에서 청정한 범행(梵行)을 행하겠나이다. 그러면 생사가 없는 피안(彼岸)에 이르러 괴로움을 벗어날 것입니다.❞

❝He who has sons has delight in sons,❞ --so said the wicked Mara,--
❝he who has cows has delight likewise in cows; for upadhi (substance) is the delight of man, but he who has no upadhi has no delight.❞

악마 바삐망이 말했다.
❝자녀가 있는 이는 자녀로 인해 기뻐하고, 소를 가진 이는 소로 인해 기뻐한다. 사람이 기쁨은 곧 집착(up adhi)이다. 집착할 데가 없는 사람은 기뻐할 것도 없다.❞

❝He who has sons has care with (his) sons,❞ --so said Bhagavat,--
❝he who has cows has likewise care with (his) cows; for upadhi (is the cause of) people's cares, but he who has no upadhi has no care❞

부처님께서 대답하셨다.
❝자녀가 있는 이는 자녀로 근심하고, 소를 가진 이는 소 때문에 걱정한다. 사람들의 걱정은 곧 집착이다. 집착이 없는 이는 근심할 것도 없다.❞

* 천신(天神, Deva) : 천(天)과 신(神)은 같기도 하고 또 엄격히 구별되기도 한다. 그러므로 정확히는 "天(神)"으로 표기해야 한다.
* 눈이 있는 이 : 부처님을 <눈뜬 분> <눈이 있는 이>라고 부르기도 한다.
* 선서(善逝) : 부처님의 별명
* 범행(梵行) : 바라문교와 불교에서 행하기를 권하는 여러 가지 선행(善行)과 계율(戒律)
